Culture Shock Dance Troupe, Inc., San Diego (herein referred to as CSSD) was founded in 1993. CSSD mission statement is as follows: “Culture Shock utilizes DANCE to cultivate education, entertainment and empowerment to inspire positive change in the communities we serve.” The organization fuels a strong dance network hosting the Culture Shock Training Academy and four multi-age dance performance troupes.

Position:

Culture Shock Dance Troupe Director

Culture Shock is a Dance Troupe of professional dancers ages 18+. CSSD seeks a mission-driven and experienced leader skilled in successfully executing strategic plans through proven leadership, coaching, and relationships management experience. Reporting to the Troupe Program Manager (TPM), The Troupe Artistic Director will have strategic and creative responsibility for the troupe’s performance and training content in connection to CSSD’s mission.

Responsibilities:

  • Choreograph and teach a pre-audition workshop.
  • Choreograph and teach audition material.
  • Cast troupe dancers in collaboration with TPM.
  • Rehearsal Schedule – coordinate with TPM to schedule all rehearsals.
  • Direct all Culture Shock Troupe rehearsals.
  • Performance Schedule – coordinate with TPM to schedule all performances.
  • Logistic and Creative support for all performances.
  • Disseminate rehearsal and performance information to troupe dancers.
  • Prepare performance materials that is appropriate for the booking.
  • Ensure all dancers are adequately prepared for the booking.
  • Provide technical feedback and professional guidance to dancers.
  • Work with the Executive Director to support campaigns hosted by CSSD.

Expectations/Participation:

Troupe Directors are expected to attend all rehearsals and performances. Director meetings are scheduled as needed. Rehearsal Schedule: Mondays 8:30p-11:30p, Wednesdays 9:30p-11:30p, and Sundays 12p-3p

Employee Pay & Hours: #17.50-$23.50/hour; part-time at 10-20 hours/week

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate for this role embraces a thoughtful approach to planning a dance troupe season, can choreograph and block performance pieces, and has excellent communication skills.

  • Hip Hop Dance performance training
  • Hip Hop Dance freestyle training
  • Experience preparing a group of dancers for various performance settings
  • Experience planning and implementing a rehearsal and performance schedule
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Skilled at time management; able to meet performance deadlines
