About the Role
We are looking for an innovative, equity-focused and relationship-driven leader with a deep and multifaceted understanding of K-12 education, higher education, and workforce ecosystems that can help ensure all Angelenos thrive in an inclusive economy.

The Program Officer will be charged with overseeing existing grantees and seeding new investments within the Skills for the new economy or Pathways to good jobs portfolio. They will seek out organizations and leaders pursuing bold and effective programs and initiatives that provide access to education skills-building, workforce training and other experiential learning needed for youth to thrive in a competitive workforce. They will be able to see the bigger picture, build relationships with and between community-based organizations, workforce and educational institutions and government institutions, bringing deep knowledge of relevant policy and a collaborative spirit necessary for making informed and compelling funding recommendations.

They will have demonstrated passion for working alongside L.A.’s historically marginalized communities and implementing sustainable, impactful community-based change. They will have a deep connection to diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice, be an advocate for change, and will have demonstrated and/or first-hand experience working in and with communities.

The ideal candidate also has experience in project execution and strong interpersonal, writing, and communication skills.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Program Development

  • Work closely with the Senior Program Officer to develop and implement the strategic and operational objectives of the respective portfolio.
  • Review and revise program strategies as needed to achieve short- and long-term impact goals.
  • Integrate program strategies internally across TBF’s grantmaking portfolios, share learnings internally and contribute to collective efforts towards systems change.
  • Work collaboratively with the Senior Program Officers, Chief Strategy Officer, Director of Grant Operations and the VP of Programs to capture, develop and share strategic evaluation outcomes and metrics.

Research & Grantmaking

  • In partnership with Senior Program Officers, identify organizations with strong potential for partnership; research, analyze, conduct due diligence, including reviews and analysis of financial documents as well as site visits for potential grantees.
  • Facilitate ongoing communication with and about grantees by organizing regular touch points; monitor the performance of grants and analyze progress reports in line with performance milestones to support grantee partner success; Identify and pursue collaboration with other funding partners.
  • Prepare and contribute to written materials, including investment recommendations, that communicate the alignment of organizational activities with portfolio outcomes and strategies, including investment recommendations and Board materials, and other background memos.
  • Actively work with the communications and program team to capture, develop, share, and utilize knowledge to lift the work of grantees.

External Engagement

  • Build and strengthen relationships with TBF’s current and prospective partners; maintain an in-depth understanding of challenges and opportunities they face and center their experiences and voices, serving as a point of contact for grantees and programmatic-related questions.
  • Identify and build strategic partnerships with community, philanthropic, business, government and other stakeholders and coalitions to advance objectives.
  • Represent TBF at meetings, public forums and convenings to build and maintain strategic alliances and foster deep relationships with individuals and partners within the local, state and national landscape.

Required Skills and Experience

  • A strong desire to contribute to the vision, mission, and values of The Broad Foundation; a high level of ethics, integrity and accountability, with an ability to use discretion and uphold confidentiality
  • 5+ years of experience in relevant subject areas or related experience, including K-12 schools or systems, career technical education, internships, apprenticeships, higher education, economic mobility, youth development, and/or workforce development
  • Demonstrated knowledge and network of diverse neighborhoods and communities of interest of the L.A. region; passion and proven track record of working with and across diverse constituencies and viewpoints
  • Strong relationship builder and networker with ability to quickly build rapport and establish trust and respect among colleagues, our grantees, partners and other stakeholders
  • Demonstrated knowledge of systems change strategies, relevant policy areas and/or advocacy
  • Strong critical thinking skills and proven ability to effectively manage details, recognize trends, analyze data and make strategic programmatic recommendations
  • Track record of developing, managing and driving multi-faceted projects and initiatives; ability to manage a pipeline of new and existing organizations
  • Willingness to work in ambiguity and adapt to changing and competing priorities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to represent TBF in many environments
  • High level of proficiency with database management tools including Salesforce and Microsoft Office suite; technologically savvy and adaptable

This position is based in Los Angeles, California. We work in a hybrid workplace with two days in the office.
