The TOMODACHI Initiative seeks to foster a generation of American and Japanese leaders who commit to strong U.S.-Japan relations, appreciate different cultures, and possess the skills necessary to succeed in and contribute to an increasingly global economy. The organization awards grants ranging from $5,000 to $8,000 to organizations that help develop cross-cultural youth leadership, help underserved communities access and learn about foreign cultures, bring new and diverse voices to the U.S.-Japan relationship, and address critical needs in underserved areas. Particular preference is given to programs that focus on STEM issues or help prepare young women to succeed in STEM and business fields.
